Inside Jane’s Fellowship Program: ShaTara Mason’s Story
Ever wonder what happens when a group of passionate, community-minded people comes together with a shared goal of making Pierce County stronger? That’s exactly what happens in Jane’s Fellowship Program (JFP)! This year-long journey brings together local leaders to learn, grow, and collaborate, meeting twice a month for hands-on experiences, meaningful conversations, and skill-building opportunities.
If you feel inspired to lead, serve, and connect with others who care deeply about our community, this could be the perfect opportunity. With applications now open for Class 13 until September 14, 2025, we sat down with ShaTara Mason, a Class 12 Fellow, to hear about her experience firsthand.

Q: What inspired you to apply?
A: “I’ve always aspired to be part of things that are bigger than me because that’s what life’s about, knowing that you are a piece of the puzzle, but the picture is much bigger.”
Q: What was the experience like during the program?
A: “I had an absolute ball! I left every session wiser than I entered, and I made amazing connections with my fellows and some alumni fellows. Plus, all the staff is amazing.”
Q: What were the most impactful moments or takeaways for you?
A: “I would say the most impactful moments have been hearing from the fellows. The interesting part about community is that we all know that they are commonalities between us, but we never really truly focus on how those commonalities can also set us apart based on how we live our lives.”
Q: How has JFP impacted your work or leadership in the community?
A: “Through JFP, I am learning that all leadership styles can change. In the same sense, I’m also learning that everyone is a leader in their own right and everyone has a role to play amongst other leaders. In my everyday work, I try to encourage others to be leaders, but JFP has shed light on how to truly cultivate those leaders through our group activities our “ field trips” and conversation.”
Q: What’s next for you and your community work?
A: “I am looking forward to bringing youth classes all around Pierce County and I’m excited to share all that I’ve learned from JFP.”
Q: What advice would you give someone thinking about applying?
A: “Speak your truth! Especially in the interview! If you can’t do it anywhere, you can do it here, take advantage of that too because the world works really hard to make sure you don’t.”
