Inside Jane’s Fellowship Program: Sherrilla Bivens’ Story
Ever wonder what happens when a group of passionate, community-minded people comes together with a shared goal of making Pierce County stronger? That’s exactly what happens in Jane’s Fellowship Program (JFP)! This year-long journey brings together local leaders to learn, grow, and collaborate, meeting twice a month for hands-on experiences, meaningful conversations, and skill-building opportunities.
If you feel inspired to lead, serve, and connect with others who care deeply about our community, this could be the perfect opportunity. With applications now open for Class 13 until September 14, 2025, we sat down with Sherrilla Bivens, Class 12 Fellow, to hear about her experience firsthand.
Meet Sherrilla
- Age: 58
- Organization/Role: Community activist; APRI-Tacoma President; Board-certified Christian Life Coach; Chaplain Christian Counselor; Therapeutic Art Life Coach
- Focus Areas: Serving unhoused and underserved communities
- Location: Tacoma, WA

Q: What inspired you to apply?
A: “When I learned about the work Jane Russell did in the community and how the program uplifted my current work in the community by providing tools and engagement with like-minded community members, it was just a great opportunity for me to enhance how I show up in the community.”
Q: What was the experience like during the program?
A: “Each session built on the next one, and I was given a chance to see different ways to approach, problem solve how and when I approach my work in the community. This program has offered me tools and a network of support to help me stand taller and stronger in the community.”
Q: What were the most impactful moments or takeaways for you?
A: “I would say the most impactful moments have been hearing from the fellows. The interesting part about community is that we all know that they are commonalities between us, but we never really truly focus on how those commonalities can also set us apart based on how we live our lives.”
Q: How has JFP impacted your work or leadership in the community?
A: “Being a part of the program has made me look at how I work in the community, and now I have more tools and resources to use.”
Q: What’s next for you and your community work?
A: “I will expand how I engage in the community and reach more community members.”
Q: What advice would you give someone thinking about applying?
A: “Apply, and you will be amazed at how you will grow as a leader, a professional, and a person.”
